Ego Vs Abundance: Recognizing the Difference

For many years in my life, chaos was my motto. Operating from a place of scarcity, survival and lack of belief in myself, I was constantly on the lookout for the next shoe to drop. Even when things were good, I had that lurking feeling from within that it could be short lived and get ready for what was coming.

Over the years of doing the work, with both my own coach and on personal level, I’ve seen the power of transitioning from needing calm to come from the outside and being able to generate that from within. Of course, that took an overhaul of lifestyle habits and choices. But, they have been well worth it and profound, seeing the changes.

My relationships with wife, family and friends has improved. I’m more productive in my days. My business has grown. I’m able to do more things with JOY throughout the day. I’m less stressed. Overall, I’m LIVING instead of just DOING.

Here’s what has helped me create more calm from within, no matter the storm that tries to come my way:

Morning Calm Routine

The foundation begins with one’s morning routine. Starting the day with a brief meditation, phone-free time, running, exercise or gentle stretches can help center the mind and body, preparing for the tasks ahead. Conscious breathing exercises, even for just a few minutes, can induce a state of relaxation that carries forward.

Throughout the Day Calm

As the day unfolds, it is crucial to build in pauses — short breaks from work or other obligations to reset and recharge. Check in with yourself and ask yourself how you’re feeling. Observe what comes up. This may involve stepping outside for some fresh air, savoring a nourishing snack, or simply gazing out a window. These micro-moments of mindfulness interrupt the momentum of busyness, allowing the mind to find respite.

When faced with stressful situations, the ability to respond calmly, rather than react impulsively, is a powerful skill to cultivate. Techniques such as mental reframing, where one shifts their perspective on a challenge, can transform a source of anxiety into an opportunity for growth. Likewise, practicing gratitude, even for the smallest of blessings, can foster a sense of equanimity.

Evening Calm Routine

As the day draws to a close, a purposeful wind-down routine can facilitate a smooth transition into the evening. This may include time to reflect on your day, taking a walk, journaling, or a technology-free period before bed. By tending to one’s inner landscape with intention, individuals can create an oasis of calm amidst the inevitable ebbs and flows of daily life.

Closing Note

Ultimately, the journey of cultivating tranquility is a deeply personal one, requiring self-awareness, patience, and a willingness to experiment. Yet, the rewards of this practice are immense, allowing individuals to navigate their days with greater ease, resilience, and a profound sense of inner peace.
